Dark Water
Derry, Northern Ireland There are a number of things that are unique about Darkwater. Firstly, it's based in Northern Ireland, a country not especially known for its game development output (although Dublin, Northern Ireland is home to studios run by PopCap and Gameloft). Secondly, the company was spun out of technology firm Instinct at the start of 2007. And thirdly the team is not relying on publisher support for its crucial first few years, due to a unique deal with the local government's Department of Enterprise Trade and Investment. http://www.developmag.com/interviews/113/The-10-New-Studios-To-Watch-In-2008 |

The Department of Enterprise Trade and Investment wants to show the world that our creative sector can produce broadband content second to none. In order to get exemplars of what Northern Ireland companies can produce the department launched the Broadband Content Initiative in April 2006. This £1.75m initiative is part of the Secretary of State's Skills and Science Fund. It has also received widespread support from the communications industry including BBC, BT, BYTEL, Cable and Wireless and the Northern Ireland Film and Television Commission. http://www.detini.gov.uk/cgi-bin/get_builder_page?page=3245&site=10&parent=199
